Necessity or infinite accuracy

In the last post, we discussed how causality works. Focusing on the laws of nature and how they determine that every effect must necessarily follow from its cause, and how flexible they are.

Infinite accuracy

I want to explain necessity with a simple example.

Imagine shooting a bullet in a video game. The computer performs underlying calculations to determine the bullet’s trajectory. However, since man-made calculations are limited by computational power, the result is typically rounded to a few decimal places, perhaps four or more. This introduces a degree of inaccuracy, a result of the limitations of human technology.

Now, let’s consider shooting the same bullet in reality. Unlike in a video game, the real world accounts for every factor: wind resistance, gravity, air pressure, and so on. These factors are not simplified or rounded; instead, nature calculates the trajectory with infinite accuracy. The bullet’s path is determined by the laws of nature, taking into account every detail down to the smallest force or influence.

While we might experience uncertainty when trying to predict where the bullet will land, this uncertainty is due to our lack of knowledge, not any randomness in nature. Nature, or God in Spinoza’s terms, ensures that the bullet flies and lands with perfect accuracy. It could not happen any other way. Everything in nature follows this same principle of infinite precision.

For example the point that bullet end up in the space within the game if we say to be the coordinates [10.23][20.56], we see that they are finite. The bullet that we shoot in nature, the calculations of it will happen infinitely accurate as [10.2381239812038...][20.56891273918723...]. This is what is called infinite necessity or infinite accuracy.

Everything from the falling of an apple to the movement of planets

In any event, from the fall of any object to the movements of your bicycle and planets, God is executing all with infinite accuracy and it makes no exception among its creations. Of course, each area of science has its own laws. But Spinoza does not get this from experiment. He gets it from the nature of God: if everything follows from a nature that could not be otherwise, nothing is left over to be merely possible (1P29, 1P33). Whether reality is deterministic at its base is still an open question in the foundations of physics, and Spinoza's claim does not rest on the answer.

Flexibility of laws of nature

This is not the kind of claim science tests. It follows from what God is, not from what we measure.

The infinite accuracy of these laws makes them infinitely inflexible.

If we can flex or change the way a law of nature works, we have found a miracle.

If we were more conscious of the inflexible universal laws that govern even the wildest and most wanton fantasy, we might perhaps be in a better position to see these thoughts above all others as objective occurrences, just as we see dreams, which nobody is supposed to be deliberate or arbitrary inventions. Here Jung is talking about the efficiency and reality of active imagination (his technique), how inflexible laws of nature make our imaginations necessarily have a source of existence in us, and how the unconscious mind can manifest itself through the dream, daydream, and active made-up imagination.

Necessity

Necessity of cause and effect is the way that Spinoza proved his concept.

Any event/effect in the world has a cause, otherwise, the effect cannot follow from nothing. The event always follows from its cause or causes. Now with that said, if we consider any event in the world, it has causes which made that event happen, those causes had their own causes, which made them happen, and so on back without end. The chain never bottoms out in a first event. So we reach a strict chain of action and reaction, and the only way to change something in it is to change everything that caused it, back further than anyone can trace.

So we can see how everything is brought to reality, by a cause, so hence it follows nothing happens without a reason, which we call truth. This is also the reason truth cannot be judged: it’s neither good nor bad.

Our mind by default imagines things happening differently, but hence it follows that this only happens in mind and imagination.

I don’t claim imagination has no effect in reality, actually the opposite. All man-made things we see used to be ideas one day, which were brought to reality.

However, the imagination and action; all followed therefrom, are all products of infinite accuracy.

Chaotic system

1972, Edward Norton Lorenz: He discovered the effect when he observed runs of his weather model with initial condition data that were rounded in a seemingly inconsequential manner. He noted that the weather model would fail to reproduce the results of runs with the unrounded initial condition data. A very small change in initial conditions had created a significantly different outcome

Weather is a form of deterministic chaotic system, which means that it is predictable in the short term but not in the long term. Small unpredictable changes completely change what we forecast almost all the time. This happens because of a lack of knowledge, many times inevitable.

The underlying reason for such phenomena is the infinitely accurate laws of nature which make everything possible.

In our everyday lives, we can see how a small change in our actions can lead to a cause that pushes a new set of dominoes that we can’t predict the outcome of.

Proof: God makes infinite things possible, in infinite ways. Each of them separately takes the infinite accuracy into account. Therefore it follows that God has (infinite * infinite) computation power with constant latency with respect to equality of execution or execution latency elapsing.
